All of our Wilderness Medicine courses are through AWLS®/AdventureMed, and are accredited by the Wilderness Medical Society and the University of Utah School of Medicine, both worldwide leaders in wilderness medical research, standards, and education.
Our Wilderness First Aid and Basic Wilderness Life Support (BWLS®) courses are designed for individuals with no previous medical training who intend to travel and recreate in wilderness settings. WSI offers the following courses, with certification through University of Utah School of Medicine:
The Wilderness First Aid course is 16-hours, and designed for laypersons with no formal medical background or training, and is an outstanding introduction to wilderness medicine. Usually held over a full weekend (Saturday & Sunday), this course will better prepare you for wilderness emergencies. Highlights of the course include:

The Basic Wilderness Life Support is a Wilderness First Responder course designed to provide an individual with an in-depth knowledge of wilderness medicine and the basic skills to treat the most common injuries and illnesses encountered in the wilderness. This program is appropriate for professional guides and other non-medical people who want a deeper understanding of wilderness medicine.

- 74-80 hours of lectures and hands on training
- Additional training in decision making and administering medication
- Accredited by the University of Utah School of Medicine
- Exceeds NOLS WFR equivalent
- This course meets the requirements for currently certified Emergency Medical Technicians to upgrade to Wilderness EMT (WEMT).
- 2-year certification card from the University of Utah School of Medicine
Course Approvals:
Both courses meet the American Camp Association 2012 Standards and the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid training requirement for Northern Tier Expeditions, Philmont Treks, and Seabase Adventures.
